Paper summary: Function-Aware Fill-in-the-Middle as Mid-Training for Coding Agent Foundation Models

The authors note that an agent's act–observe–continue loop has the same shape as a function call site, and use function-level fill-in-the-middle mid-training on Python repos to improve coding agents on SWE-Bench.

  • Calling a tool and using its result looks like calling a function and using its return value, and ordinary code has billions of examples of that.
  • Masking whole functions and asking the model to fill them in teaches it to use information that arrives from elsewhere.

Inkling: a ~1T-parameter open multimodal model with 1M context

Thinking Machines released Inkling on Hugging Face, a ~1T-parameter decoder-only multimodal MoE (41B active) that takes image, text and audio, has a 1M context, and was trained on 45T tokens; a smaller Inkling-Small followed.

  • Per the Hugging Face post, it's the first large open model of about 1T parameters with a 1M context that natively accepts image, text and audio.
  • It ships in BF16 and NVFP4, with speculative multi-token-prediction layers for faster inference.
