A generator and a discriminator trained against each other; the minimax game written out, a small GAN learning a 2-D ring of Gaussians, and the mode-collapse failure it can fall into.
- The generator turns noise into samples; the discriminator tries to tell them from real data; each improves by beating the other.
- Mode collapse: the generator covers only a few modes of the data because that's enough to fool the discriminator.
